Food Science and Nutrition in the Sixth Form at The King David High School enables students to develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between food, health and nutrition, while building practical skills in food preparation and analysis.

The course explores how food affects health across different stages of life and how nutritional knowledge can be applied in real-world contexts. Students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, gaining insight into the science behind food, the role of nutrients in the body and the importance of food safety and quality.

Through a combination of practical and academic study, students build confidence in analysing nutritional needs, planning balanced diets and preparing food safely and effectively.

Course Offered

Level 3 Food Science and Nutrition

The Level 3 Food Science and Nutrition qualification provides students with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to progress to higher education or careers in the food, health and hospitality sectors.

Students study a range of topics related to nutrition, food science and food safety, learning how diet impacts health and wellbeing.

Areas of Study

Students explore key areas including:

  • Nutrients and Metabolism – understanding the functions of nutrients in the body and how they support health

  • Food Safety and Quality – learning how food is produced, handled and stored safely

  • Food and Health – exploring how diet influences health and how food choices can help prevent diet-related illnesses

Students apply their knowledge through practical tasks, investigations and coursework activities.

Assessment

Students complete four units over the two-year course.

Assessment includes a combination of:

  • Externally assessed examinations

  • Non-examined assessment (coursework)

Coursework units allow students to apply their knowledge in practical contexts, while examinations assess their understanding of key nutritional and scientific principles.

Students receive regular feedback to support progress and develop both practical and analytical skills.
