Choosing GCSE options is an important step in every student’s journey through secondary school. This page provides information to help students and parents understand the Key Stage 4 curriculum at The King David High School and support informed decisions about subject choices for Years 10 and 11.

At Key Stage 4, all students study a core curriculum that provides a strong academic foundation. Alongside this, students select additional option subjects that allow them to explore their interests, develop new skills and prepare for future pathways including Sixth Form, further education and careers.

Our curriculum is designed to ensure that every student is challenged appropriately and supported to achieve their full potential. To support this, students follow one of two pathways which help guide subject choices and provide the right balance of academic challenge and support.

Core Curriculum

All students study the following subjects as part of the core curriculum:

  • English (English Language and English Literature – 2 GCSEs)

  • Mathematics (1 GCSE)

  • Religious Studies (1 GCSE)

  • Science (Combined Science or Separate Sciences – 2 GCSEs or 3 GCSEs)

These subjects ensure that students continue to develop essential knowledge and skills that are valued by universities, employers and further education providers.

Option Subjects

Alongside the core curriculum, students choose additional subjects from a wide range of GCSE and vocational options, including:

  • History

  • Geography

  • French

  • Spanish

  • Modern Hebrew

  • Art & Design

  • Drama

  • Music

  • Computer Science

  • Business Studies

  • Food Preparation & Nutrition

  • Physical Education

  • Creative iMedia (vocational)

Each subject develops different skills and interests, allowing students to personalise their learning and explore areas they may wish to pursue further in the future.

Pathways

Students follow one of two Key Stage 4 pathways to ensure they receive the most appropriate curriculum for their learning needs.

Blue Pathway

  • Core curriculum

  • Three option subjects

  • At least one subject from the EBacc group (marked with an asterisk in the booklet)

Yellow Pathway

  • Core curriculum

  • Two option subjects

  • At least one subject from the EBacc group

  • Additional timetabled intervention to support progress

Students are placed on the most suitable pathway based on their Key Stage 3 progress and attainment data.

Making Your Choices

Students will be asked to list their preferred option subjects in order of preference on the options form. The school will use these preferences to create option blocks that meet the choices of as many students as possible.

Please note that:

  • Some subjects may run in the extended school day.

  • Courses are offered subject to demand.

  • Not all combinations of subjects may be possible.

Students and parents will have the opportunity to discuss subject choices during the Year 9 Parents’ Evening, where teachers will be available to offer guidance and answer questions.

Supporting Your Decision

Choosing GCSE subjects should be based on a combination of:

  • Interest and enjoyment of the subject

  • Strengths and achievements in Key Stage 3

  • Future aspirations and potential career pathways

Students are encouraged to read the subject pages carefully and speak to their teachers if they would like more information about a particular course.
